Sanitary Design

Mission Statement

The mission of the Cuyahoga County Sanitary Engineering Division is to protect, preserve and promote the public health and welfare of Cuyahoga County residents by managing, maintaining and operating sanitary sewerage facilities and storm water drainage within a sewer district pursuant to the Ohio Revised Code and Federal laws and regulations. The Sanitary Engineering Division’s purpose is to achieve environmental quality in streams, in rivers and in Lake Erie.

Goals:

  • Maintain a robust sewer planning and design program addressing the needs of Member Communities
  • Improve the carrying capacity of the County operated sewer system in order to reduce flooding
  • Effectively manage the County operated sewage pumping stations, providing for the continuously monitoring of sewage pumping stations operations and upgrades
  • Maximize available state funding in order to provide economic assistance to Member Communities in the repair and upgrade of their sewer collection system
  • Allocate in-house staff economically for the timely delivery of projects for construction
  • Manage outside consultant services effectively to receive the maximum benefit
  • Pursue professional development of the engineering staff through continuing education

Duties of the Sanitary Design Division include the following:

  • Select and prioritize sewers and sewage pumping stations for appropriate capital improvements
  • Develop and maintain project work schedules for Member Communities’ Design projects
  • Provide for the design of detail plans and technical specifications for sewer improvements
  • Review and approve reports, plans and specifications prepared by outside consultants
  • Manage in-house staff and consulting engineers to complete projects for construction
  • Maintain, update and improve the Sewer Design standards for the County
  • Provide technical support related to the engineering of sanitary sewers to other divisions and member communities
